Colour · Photo
A cartoon Mickey Mouse stands in a relaxed pose with a wide smile, large round black ears and white gloves. The figure is drawn with solid black outlines and filled areas of black, red, white and yellow, with soft shading on the shoes and legs. The design is centred against plain skin with a small amount of background visible at the edges.

I was the one sent to clean it off. My mum had been asked and she said I was the one with the steady hands. I took a bottle of cleaner and a rag up to the lift at nine on a Tuesday night, the strip lights humming like wasps, and found the mouse had moved. He was on the mirrored panel now, leaning, one white glove resting on his hip as if he were waiting for a late bus.
I didn't clean him. I stood there with the rag wet in my hand while the doors tried to close on me, and I thought about Gran, who used to draw him on the backs of my school letters so I'd have something to look at on the bus. She died in March. Nobody had told the lift.
The next morning the mouse was gone and an engineer was swearing at the control panel. I said nothing. But at the bottom of the stairwell, scratched into the paint beside the bin store, were two yellow shoes and a grin, and under them, very small, a word in Gran's handwriting that I would have known anywhere: go on.
