The ovens were already ticking when I came down the back stairs at a quarter to five, and Mr Okafor had left a tray of unlabelled buns on the marble with a note that just said Don't. I have a fair idea what he meant. The shop sits above the fishmonger on Gull Row, so by the time the shutters go up the whole street smells of bread and brine.

Last Tuesday the frost got into the pipes and Mr Okafor swore at the boiler in three languages. Ruth from the chandlers came in for her rolls with her hat pulled down over her ears and told us a penguin had been sliding down the harbour steps in the dark, bobble hat and all, shouting at the gulls. Nobody believed her except me, and I only believed her because the flour bin was found tipped over with small webbed prints pressed into the dust.

I sat on the flour sacks last night and waited for him. Around three the snowflakes began drifting in through the vent, six points each, and they settled on the cooling racks as if they were looking for somewhere to stay. He came up the stairs at half four, stood on the bottom step where the ice had formed, and took a cinnamon knot without asking. Then he gave me a look as though I owed him rent.

I've left him a tray of day-old currant buns by the back door and a note in my best handwriting, which is terrible. Come in February if you can. Bring your own gloves. The bread here is good, the company is strange, and I have not been this happy in years.
