His name was Plum, though nobody who met him dared say so to his face. He had walked out of the cold country on the back of a lorry that carried frozen fish, and when the lorry broke down outside Tindle, he simply stepped off and started walking south. The crown had been a gift from a gull who lost a bet about the weather. It had three red stones set in it, one for each winter he had survived, and he wore it like a man who expected to be recognised.

On the salt flats he met Marisol, who sold cactus fruit from a cart with one bad wheel. She asked him what a king was doing in the heat. He said a king must be seen in the place where his kingdom ended, so that the place would not forget it had once been ice. She gave him water in a tin cup, and he drank it all and said it tasted of nothing at all, which he meant as the highest praise.

When Plum finally reached the dry lake bed at the end of the road, the stones in his crown were glowing like coals, and the old tank beside the water lit up blue from the glow. He sat down on the cracked mud and waited for the sea to come back. It hasn't yet. But that's why the road bends left at the tank, and why, if you drive it at dusk, you'll see a small crowned shape keeping watch.
