Sleeping cat in a pink heart

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A sleeping grey and white cat curls inside a solid pink heart, with two small white sparkles beside it. The heart has a scalloped outline that shifts from pink through purple to blue, and the cat is drawn with bold black outlines and flat shading. The tattoo sits centred on bare skin, with a plain light background at the edge of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, the grass is only damp where the lemonade went over. You want the one about the cat that wouldn't wake. Every fair has a cat that belongs to nobody and lives on the back of the big wheel. Ours was grey with a white bib and a face like a disappointed bishop, and we called her Tuesday, because she arrived in a crate of gingerbread on a Tuesday and never once bothered to leave.

Old Harriet Pim ran the gingerbread stall under a painted heart board, pink as a boiled sweet, its edge scalloped in purple that faded to blue where the paint ran short. Every night at close Tuesday climbed into the hollow behind the lettering and slept the sleep of the well fed, while the bulbs on the waltzer went out one by one and the sky put on the white sparkles Harriet had promised the board and never got round to painting.

Then came the autumn the fair packed up for the last time at Wenhaston. The lorries rolled at first light, and the men unbolted the board in a hurry, lifted it onto the trailer, and never once looked inside. Tuesday didn't stir. Harriet was the first to notice she was gone, and by then the convoy was halfway to the coast.

When the vicar went out on a frosty morning, he found the board propped against the churchyard railings, and there was Tuesday, curled in her pink heart as neat as a parcel, not a whisker out of place. Nobody had the heart to wake her. So she stayed. The vicar has been leaving a saucer of milk on the step ever since, and if you walk past on a clear night you'll still see her there, sparkling away on the railings.
