Dimble had been sacked from the power station in Ashford for the third time that month, so the greenhouse at the back of the allotments became the only place with a door that didn't spark. Mrs Okonedo, who kept the plot next door, pretended not to notice the faint crackle from the glass whenever the yellow creature sneezed. She left ripe tomatoes on the path for him, which he ate with great dignity, one cheek still fizzing.

The trouble started with the pink mallow. Somebody had planted it along the fence the spring before, five petals each, a yellow button of a centre, and Dimble decided it was the only thing in the county that matched his mood. He sat beside it every evening and let the static off his ears in small, polite bursts, and by June the leaves had turned a glossy, impossible green.

Then the council sent a man with a clipboard. He wanted the allotments cleared for a bypass, and he wanted the lightning creature gone along with them. Dimble heard the van doors slam and felt the charge gather in his cheeks like a held breath. He looked at the mallow, then at the clipboard, and for once he did not spark.

Instead he tucked the flower behind one ear, walked straight past the man, and climbed into the back of the van. By the time anyone thought to open it, the bypass had a new route, and the greenhouse had a hand-painted sign on its door that read: Closed for Pollination.
