Colour tattoo of a cartoon Eevee-style creature with pink, yellow and grey panels cut by diagonal green bands, on a lower leg.

Eevee-style creature on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon creature resembling an Eevee evolution sits centred on the calf, with a pink body, dark grey legs, yellow tail and ear details and a spiky blue and yellow crest. Bold outlines and flat, saturated colour fill the design, and diagonal green bands cut across it. The photo is taken straight on against bare skin, with the knee visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At twenty past three the corridor on Ward 7 went the colour of pond water, the way it always did when the green exit sign hummed over the lifts. Nadia Okafor had worked nights for eleven years and knew that hum better than her own kettle. She was pinning a drawing back on the play corner's noticeboard when she saw the lines cutting across it.

The drawing was of a creature the girl in bed nine insisted was called Sprig, though the nurses had heard it called other things. It was pink as a boiled sweet, with dark grey legs like wet slate and a crest of blue spikes that looked like ice. Someone had run a green crayon through it at a slant, and the paper had split into strips that sat slightly out of line, as if the creature had been sliced and shuffled. "She did that herself," said Ruth, the healthcare assistant, reaching past with a linen trolley. "Says he's been practising sneaking out."

Nadia carried the drawing down to the store cupboard, where the light was yellow and steady, and laid the strips on the table. She fitted them back together by their crayon edges, the way she had once pieced together a lighthouse jigsaw with her father. When the last green band met its neighbour, the paper lay flat and whole, and the creature looked up at her with two pale eyes, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice it had been cut.

At seven the girl in bed nine was awake and asking for her drawing. Nadia handed it over. Sprig was whole again and the green lines had gone, though a faint shine of crayon still ran along the paper where the cuts had been. "He went for a walk," the girl said, quite unsurprised, and tucked him under the blanket.
