Mickey Mouse sorcerer on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cartoon Mickey Mouse wearing a blue wizard hat with yellow stars and a crescent moon, arms outstretched among swirling golden rings of light. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with airbrushed blues, purples and greens forming a starry, cloudy background. The design fills a roughly circular panel on the skin, with bright yellow and blue tones dominating the composition.

The hat had belonged to the old magician of Harrowgate Pass, and when he died in the snow the village argued over it for a week. Ada Brennick, who swept the chapel and was too small to join the arguing, took it while nobody was looking. It was blue as a winter dusk, sewn all over with gold stars, and a crescent moon sat on its brim like a fingernail paring. Nobody had told her it would fit. It did.

The rings came the first night she tried to sweep the chapel floor with a word. Gold ropes of light spun out from the hat's point and wound round the pews, round the bell rope, round the mule in the lean-to who had never once looked impressed by anything. She was frightened. She was also, she found, unable to stop laughing, because the mule had begun to turn too, slowly, like a dancer who had mislaid her shoes.
Old Teodor came up the pass in the morning with a lantern and a grievance. He stood in the doorway and watched the light coil round the altar, then said, "That hat has a rule. You may call the sky down, but you must give back what the sky asks." Ada asked what the sky asked. Teodor only pointed up, where the clouds had turned the colour of cold plums and the first stars were coming out in their hundreds.
She took the hat off. The rings slackened and dropped like wet rope, and the mule stopped turning and sneezed. Ada hung the hat on the nail by the door, moon side out, and went to fetch the broom, which was still the only magic she trusted.
