Mickey Mouse watercolour calf tattoo

Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Mickey Mouse is shown mid-stride with outstretched arms, drawn in black outline with grey shading on the ears, face and gloves. Loose watercolour-style splashes in blue, purple, red, orange, yellow and green fill the background and spill around the figure. The tattoo sits on a calf, photographed outdoors against grass.

The cels had to be dry by Friday, and Arthur Pell had already ruined two of them by sneezing into the paint water. I was nineteen, the only person in Milford Cross who could make a pair of red shorts look as though they had been pulled on in a hurry, so I was the one he sent up the ladder to the loft above the chapel hall with a tin of ink and a jar of blue wash.

Our star was a little mouse called Doodle. Edie Pell had drawn him in black pen so fine you could count the hairs inside his ears, and he had the look of someone who had just remembered an appointment and was running late for it. His white gloves were the hardest part. Arthur wanted them crisp, but I kept thinking of the wet Tuesday we had spent watching the rain run down the chapel windows, so I splashed the background instead, purple and blue and a bruised green, and let the colour spill past his outline as if he had charged straight through a puddle of paint.

Mr Lusk, who ran the projector at the Regal, came up the ladder on Thursday with his hat in his hands and a face like a funeral. Then he saw the reel run on the sheet, and he laughed so hard he had to sit on a crate. The smudges had made Doodle look as though he were leaving the frame at full tilt, trailing colour behind him.

On Saturday the matinee was packed. At the back, a row of children leaned forward to point at the rainbow streak behind the mouse's heels, and not one of them asked why it wasn't tidy. I still have the last cel in a shoebox under my bed, its gloves washed a faint yellow where my brush slipped.
