Sit down, sit down, and stop fidgeting with those paper cups. Every Saturday at the Coronation Hall in Bramley Vale, the band played until half ten, and everybody danced whether they could or not. That was the year the pink singer came in through the fire door, round as a bramble bush and no taller than a milk crate, with a tune so soft it made the trombonist yawn mid-note.

Within a minute the whole floor was snoring. Doreen Ashby, who ran the tea urn and had never once sat down in her life, stood in the middle of it with a tray of Battenberg in her hands and felt her eyelids going heavy. Then a small green box came clattering across the parquet on tiny legs, its screen glowing with a face that looked worried, and it stopped at her feet and bleeped twice.

Doreen had an old handheld in her handbag, the kind with a squeaky pineapple charm hanging off the strap, and she dug it out and pressed the buttons. The pink thing blinked at the sudden light. The box bleeped a tune back at it, an answering song a bit off key, and the singer hiccupped, flushed a shade pinker, and tottered off to join it.

Mind you, the trombonist swore blind that when they had gone out through the fire door, the sleepers woke to find a note pinned to the urn, written in fine black ink: Lots of love, Mummy, xxx. Nobody in Bramley Vale ever found out who wrote it, and the Battenberg was gone by morning.
