Huddled cats outline on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A group of around eight cats sits closely together, some with paws linked at the centre, drawn in a single weight black outline. The linework is clean and uniform with no shading, and the design sits centrally on the thigh with the tattoo fully in frame. The ink is black only, against plain skin, with a grey garment at the top edge and a wooden floor in the background.

The lights on Deck Nine went out at the forty-first hour of the sleep cycle, and by the time you reached the hydroponics bay the cold had already found the seams. Eight cats were waiting for you there, the ship's whole feline census, sitting in a loose ring around the warm gap behind the algae tanks. Mo had counted them that morning for the log. Nobody had trusted the log since the reclamation fault.

Nobody had asked you to come, but the hatch had been left open, and Oriel had always said you could read a room the way the cats read a draught. You knelt on the grating. The nearest cat, grey as old solder, lifted one paw and hooked it through the paw of the cat beside it, and the chain went round the ring until the last paw, a torn-eared tabby, reached back and found the first. Then they all leaned in together, shoulder to shoulder, and the hum of the tanks steadied under them.
The emergency cells were rated for six hours. Mo's plan was to ration them to the medical bay and the seed store, and the cats were not part of any plan. Yet when the temperature dropped to the number the manual marked in red, the ring stayed exactly as it was, not one of them drifting toward the vents. They had worked out the arithmetic their own way: keep the heat in the circle, and nobody gets left outside it.
When the cells came back at the seventh hour, the grating was warm and the cats were scattered across the bay, washing themselves as if nothing had happened. Only you were still kneeling, and a single grey hair had caught on your sleeve, a thread of warmth that had outlasted the dark.
