One February the baker's daughter, Mabel Orr, lost the ring her grandmother had left her, and she sat on the kerb crying into her scarf. The tiger leaned over the railings, one striped arm stretched out like a washing line, and fished it from a drain under the stall of dead lilies. He held it up to the streetlamp to check it was gold, then handed it over with a flourish that nearly tipped her into the gutter.

She asked him what he wanted for it. He thought about this for the length of three bus departures. Then he folded his paws together in front of his chest and made a heart, and that was all the payment he would take, though what it meant depended on who was looking.

Mabel went home. The tiger climbed back to his wall. The bakery light stayed on past midnight, the lamps on Carrow Street kept humming, and nobody in the city could say for certain which of them had been keeping watch on the other.
