Three pixel hearts on a wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three small pixel-art hearts sit in a horizontal row on the inner wrist and forearm. The first two are solid red with dark outlines, and the third is mostly white with a red outline and a red fill on its left side. The skin is light and the background is a pale yellow wall, with a green sleeve visible at the left edge.

Right, pull your chairs in, the ones of you who still owe me a pound from the tuck shop. This is about the winter Dave Hollis brought his grey handheld into the Year Eleven common room, and how three hearts in the top corner of the screen decided who in this room would be stuck paying their own bus fare home. Nobody else was allowed near the controls, and that was the rule, written on a torn bit of exercise book and stuck to the lid.

Three hearts, that was the lot. Two full and red, one half-drained so you could see the white where the red had given up. Every time a skeleton or a slime clipped Dave's little knight, a heart went dark and he swore at the speaker like it had insulted his mother. When the third heart turned white, you handed it over, no arguments, and everyone knew it was a sacking offence to be the one who lost the knight.
Sandra Quayle took it off him in the fourth week of term, on the bench by the bike sheds, with the dinner bell going. She had never played anything in her life. She walked the knight straight into a pit, lost one heart, then the next, and then, with the screen flashing and the tinny music climbing, she did the thing none of us had thought to try. She stopped moving and let the thing come to her.
I won't tell you what she found at the bottom of that castle, because Sandra has never forgiven the version I told at the Christmas do. Only that she came up the stairs with one heart left, grinning like she'd been let out of the headmaster's office, and handed the grey box back to Dave without a word. He still has it. Look at him, pretending he doesn't.
