Nobody at the Penhallow wedding noticed the balloon at first, because it was the only thing in the marquee that wasn't trying to be noticed. Aunt Mags had tied it to a chair back at the top table so the children would stop pulling at the bunting, and it bobbed there all through the speeches, a small white cat with a red bow pinned to the air by a thread of black string.

Then the back flap of the marquee lifted in a gust off the Cornish moor, and the string slid through Nell's fingers before she could grab it. She was eight, and she had been promised a turn with the cake knife, and she stood very still while the cat rose over the hedge, past the lych gate, and out toward the lane where the minibus was waiting for the coach party.

She chased it for three fields in her good shoes. Her cousin Ruth shouted after her to stop being daft, but the balloon kept just ahead, dipping when Nell slowed and lifting when she gave up and walked. At the stile by the churchyard it snagged on the hawthorn and hung there, turning slowly, its red heart bumping against the thorns like something knocking to be let in.

Nell climbed the stile, unhooked the string with careful fingers, and held it. Below her the wedding went on without them: the band starting up, the bride laughing at something her new husband had said. She decided the cat could come back with her after all, and she did not hurry.
