The design wraps around a finger on the back of a hand, with the hand filling most of the frame against a dark background.

The stable at the back of Harrow Cove had been empty since the carthorses were sold, and Mrs Pennock kept meaning to lock it. Nell found the unicorn in the hay loft on the first wet morning of the summer, curled up beside a tin of pear drops and a bent tin whistle. It was no bigger than a spaniel, with a lilac mane that tumbled over one ear and a horn the colour of a seashell's inside. Its eye was so large and so blue that Nell felt she had been caught doing something wrong.

It would not come down the ladder, so Nell brought the ladder to it, one rung at a time, and the unicorn watched her with the patience of a creature who had waited a great deal longer than she had. By the Friday they had an arrangement. Nell brought oatcakes and the stale ends of the boarders' bread. The unicorn let her brush the tangles from its mane with the bristle brush from her grandmother's dressing table, and in return it showed her the pale teal sea that could only be seen from the top of the cliff path when the tide was turning.

On the last evening of the season the Hendersons' boy came up the loft steps with a torch and a bucket of rope, and the unicorn lowered its head and blew one soft breath across Nell's knuckles. Her hand smelled of salt and pear drops for a week afterwards. Mrs Pennock never did lock the stable, and every spring a new scatter of lilac hair turned up caught on the nails.
