Now sit closer, you, and mind the lamp, because the sea does not like to be talked about after dark. There was a whale in the cold bay of Ollerby who was the roundest whale that ever swam, round as a loaf and twice as fond of company. The fishermen's wives called her Brisket, which she did not care for, and the boys who sold winkles on the quay said she had a face like a kindly uncle. She had one trouble. Every time she was happy, which was often, she blew a spout so cheerful that it rose in curls and came out the top as small pink hearts, and the gulls would fight over them.

One grey morning old Mother Tennant came down to the slipway with a basket of mackerel and a grievance. Her grandson had gone out in a borrowed boat and not come back, and the sea had gone quiet in the way that frightens people. Brisket surfaced beside the wall, looked at the basket, looked at the old woman, and blew. Three curling spouts climbed up into the fog and each one ended in a heart, bright as a coal, and they hung there so long that the whole harbour could see them.

The boy came home on the evening tide, sheepish and sunburnt, towed by a sleepy fishing smack, with a heart drifting above his head that nobody else could see. Mother Tennant swore for an hour about the cost of mackerel. Brisket went back to her cheerful swimming. And to this day, if you are ever sad off the Ollerby wall and you look up, you will find a pair of soft, round eyes looking back at you, and they are looking for a reason to be happy with you.
