The bell on Tibbs's collar was the only thing in Hallow Cross that ever arrived on time. The summer the lock-keeper's boy went missing in the fen, the whole village walked the reeds calling his name, and nobody thought to stop and listen. Tibbs was shut in the vestry at the time, having taken a dislike to the sexton's gloves. When the search party came past the tower he rang himself out of there, one hard clang after another, and the boy, lost somewhere past the sluice gates, turned round at the sound and walked home through the sedge with his wellies full of water.
Nan's husband had scratched a six-pointed star into the vestry door years before, a mark for lost things that the old vicar had insisted was only for decoration. Tibbs sat beneath it every evening afterwards, as if on duty.
That winter Nan unclipped the bell to see what the house would sound like without it. Tibbs came to the back step at dusk and stood there, head tilted, waiting for a noise that wasn't coming. By the time she gave in and fastened it back on, the kettle had boiled dry and she was listening for him again, the way she always had.
