The royal cat had been sitting on the treaty for three days, and nobody in the chamber dared lift her off it. Lady Orla, who had not been asked her opinion on anything since the old king died, pointed at the ink and said the cat wanted to sign. We laughed. Her name was Pellow, and Master Cobb, who kept the royal cellar, swore she was the reincarnation of a queen who had poisoned three husbands and got away with all of them. I swore she was a cat. We both had a point, and neither of us could prove it, so we agreed to disagree over a jug of the good red and left her to her opinions.

On the fourth morning the treaty was sealed and dry, with a small paw print pressed beside the crown. Nobody could say who had done it. The border lords were furious, then relieved, then suspicious, and the peace held longer than any peace in Harrowmere had any right to.

I still have my copy. In the margin, in a hand I have never been able to match to anyone at court, someone has written the cat's word in capitals and underlined it twice. I asked Pellow once what it meant. She looked at me the way cats do, as though I had been asking the wrong question since the day I was born, and said it again.
