Cat head with crescent moon on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat's face sits at the centre of the image, framed by a crescent moon and disc above and a beaded necklace with a scarab pendant and hanging drops below. The design uses clean black outlines with soft grey shading on the cat's ears, eyes and muzzle. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred grey background and dark clothing on the left.

Mrs Abernethy kept the cat in the airing cupboard through the winter, the only warm room in the house, and she called it Bast as if it were a lodger who paid in mice. Nobody ever saw her feed it. The milk was left on the bottom step each morning, and by noon the saucer was dry and the step was wet with sea mist.

I came to Kittiwake House in October with a suitcase and a letter from a solicitor in Margate, and the first thing Mrs Abernethy said was that the cat did not care for men with wet hair. I had been out on the pier. She shut the door on the wind and told me the moon was waxing, which she said was the reason for everything: the tides, the bad tempers, the way the gulls screamed at the bins.
On the last night of the month the cat sat on the windowsill of the top landing with its tail wrapped round its feet and watched the harbour lamps come on one by one. Its eyes narrowed to slits. Below, a lorry reversed into the square and a man began shouting about a brass scarab stolen from the museum in Ramsgate. Mrs Abernethy came up the stairs in her slippers carrying a small beetle on a string of blue beads.
She fastened it round the cat's neck with fingers that did not shake. "There," she said. "Now she can find her way home." The cat stretched, yawned, and padded into the dark of the landing. In the morning the airing cupboard was empty, and the saucer on the bottom step was full.
