Cat in a beanie on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A cat's face wearing a black knit beanie with a small orange patch fills the back of the hand, with the ears hidden under the hat and the eyes large and detailed. The cat is shaded in soft greys and tans, with fine whisker lines and smooth gradients across the fur. The black beanie and orange patch add strong contrast against the skin and the plain brick background.

Pepper had been sulking under the trestle table since half past two, and Dan knew better than to try coaxing him out with the ring cushion. The cushion was white satin with a bow the florist had pinned on at dawn. Pepper regarded it the way he regarded the vicar, as a personal insult.

"He won't come out without the hat," said Maureen, Dan's aunt, who had driven up from Basingstoke with a tin of shortbread and no patience whatsoever. The hat was black knit with a small orange badge stitched to the front. Bev from the Thursday knitting group had made it the winter Pepper turned up on her back step half-frozen, and he had worn it ever since, which was how the whole village knew which tabby was his.

So they negotiated. Dan crouched in his hired morning suit and offered a sardine, then a flake of tuna, then one of his own cufflinks, which Pepper batted under the sideboard with great care. In the end the hat came off in a skirmish near the bread rolls, and the cat looked up with those enormous, unblinking eyes, outraged and suddenly, unmistakably, ready.

Dan tugged the beanie back down over the ears, tied the ring box to the collar with a length of green ribbon, and walked him up the aisle at a pace that suited a cat who had never once been hurried. Halfway to the front, the bride saw the orange badge catch the light and started laughing so hard she had to hold on to the altar rail. Pepper sat down in the exact centre of the carpet, as if he had planned it all along.
