Veiled cat portrait with rose on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cat with green eyes and striped brown fur wears a black veiled hat decorated with a large red rose, and holds a glass of milk in front of a lace-trimmed collar. The portrait sits inside an oval frame of black scrollwork with blue sky shading behind the figure. The shading is smooth and painterly, with bold black outlines and strong colour in the rose and clothing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Hester Plum had never once been painted without her veil, and she held that a lady's face was her own business until the sitting was paid for. The painter, a thin man called Ambrose Quill who smelled of turpentine and cheap gin, had arrived at Number Nine Wickham Row with a wooden frame under his arm and a promise that the portrait would hang above the Lowther piano by Michaelmas. She poured him a saucer of milk from the blue jug, because the Lowthers were coming to tea and she wanted the house to look well fed.

The sitting went badly from the start. Ambrose kept asking her to hold the glass still, and she kept reminding him that she had been holding things steady since before his mother was born. The rose on her hat was the only thing she had allowed to be bright. He wanted it smaller. She told him that the Lowthers had a grey hat with a grey bird on it, and that a rose would be remembered long after the Lowthers' bird had been eaten.

When the portrait was finished the frame was oval and black, curled with iron scrollwork like the gates of a churchyard. Mrs Lowther stood before it for a long time at the tea party, saying nothing at all, and then said she had never seen a cat look so entirely pleased with herself. Hester thanked her and did not explain that the milk in the glass had gone sour the morning before, and that she had drunk it anyway, out of spite.
