Cat outline tattoo on the nape of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A single-weight black outline of a cat seen from behind, sitting upright on a horizontal branch with its tail curling down below it. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the design is filled only by the bare skin inside the outline. The ink is black on pale skin, with blonde hair framing the top of the image against a blurred background.

Sit down, the fire is the only warm thing left in Harrowmere, and I'll not waste it on your fidgeting. Where was I? Ah, the cat. The Lord of the keep had a grey tom called Pilch, who would not come down from the broken gallery for anyone, not the steward, not the cook with her cream, not the Lord himself with his hounds bellowing below. He sat on the one oak limb that still reached over the moat wall, his back to the castle, his face to the far hills, and he would not turn round.

The autumn the bridge fell, the men tried to coax him with fish and with bells. Nothing. So the steward climbed out along the branch himself, cursing, and found the tom gone quite still, tail hanging over the water like a question nobody had bothered to ask. The steward said afterwards that the cat was not watching the hills at all. He was watching the river, where the Lord's daughter had gone under three nights before, and where nobody had thought to look because they had all been searching the road.

They found her downstream, caught in the reeds by the mill race. The tom came down the next morning, unhurried, and walked through the hall as though it were his own, which it was. He never climbed the gallery again, and he never once turned round to look at the castle, not even when the new Lord came and called his name from the steps.
