Cat playing with a yarn ball on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon cat sits behind a red yarn ball, with a thin red thread trailing from the ball across the wrist. The cat and the outline are drawn in fine, mostly grey-black linework, with the yarn and thread in a solid red. The photograph is taken at a shallow angle against a soft, blurred background, with the wrist and part of a checked sleeve in frame.

The baker's cat would not be fed until the bread was in the oven, so every morning before the church clock struck three, it sat on the flour sacks and watched Hannah Vell knead. It was a grey cat with a face like a folded note, and it had a ball of red wool that it had dragged out of a chest years before and never let go of.

One February the snow came down so thick that the baker's boy, sent to fetch milk from the Hollins farm, did not come back. Hannah took her lantern and went out into the white street calling his name. She had no notion which way he had gone. The cat came padding after her, and then, before she could stop it, it ran ahead with the wool trailing behind, the red thread pulled tight across the drifts.
She followed the thread past the mill, over the frozen beck and into the lee of the barn at Hollins. The boy was sitting in the straw with his arms round an empty churn, and the cat had already sat down beside him, its tail curled over his boots. The thread ran from the ball in its lap, back through the snow, all the way to the bakery door.
Hannah wound the wool up as they walked home, the boy holding the lantern and the cat trotting ahead. When they reached the bakery the ovens were warm and the window had turned the colour of pale bread. She pinned the last length of red thread to the shelf above the flour, where it stayed for thirty winters, and the cat never again asked to be fed before the loaves were out.
