Cats with umbrellas on shoulder and upper arm
Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The photo shows a person's bare shoulder and upper arm, with a cartoon cat holding an umbrella on each. The cats have bold black outlines and simple white faces with cross eyes and whiskers, and the umbrellas are filled in red on the shoulder and purple on the arm. Small outlined stars surround the arm tattoo, and a red faceted gem sits at the lower left edge of the frame.

Dear Pim, the wind on the Gorse Hollow pass has finally eaten my second umbrella, so I am writing this one from under the last of the red one, which is more of a hat now with ribs. You will want to know about the shepherd. He is called Dafydd, though he insists on being called the Weather, and he has been waiting for his post since the thaw. Whatever it was, he says it must be delivered dry or not at all.

The letter, I should say, is not from him. It is from a lighthouse keeper's widow in Cromer who has been sending him one card a year for nine years, always about the same clouds. I carried it tucked in my ear for two days. Rain got into everything except the ear, which I now recommend to all couriers.
At the top of the pass the stars came out, the proper kind that look like someone has spilled sugar on a black cloth. I counted eleven before a gust lifted my umbrella clean off the rock and I had to go chasing it across the scree, shouting a word my mother would not allow in the house. The purple one went over the edge. I felt sorry for it for almost a minute.
Dafydd took the card, read it twice, and laughed until he had to sit down in a puddle. Then he handed me the umbrella he had been using as a walking stick and said the rain was nobody's business but its own. I am writing this under his black one now. It is far too big and I look ridiculous, but it is dry, and I have never been so pleased to be ridiculous.
