The landlady at the Fell Crown has three rules for guests stuck in the snow, and the first is that nobody touches the cat's ribbon. You learn this on the first night, when the small white cat with the red bow leaps onto the bar and settles on your ledger as though it has paid for the room. You reach for it. Mrs Pargeter looks at you over her reading glasses and you think better of it.

The storm lasts four days. You play cribbage with a surveyor from Kendal who cheats badly and blames the draught. Each evening the cat carries off one small thing from each table: a glove, a teaspoon, a letter from someone's sister. By the third night the stolen things are lined up along the windowsill in a neat row. The surveyor swears the cat has been drawing on the frost with its paws, leaving trails of little painted stars in pink, teal and violet, and that they point towards the lighthouse on the far moor.

On the fourth morning a plough grinds up the lane and the room fills with grey light. You go down to settle your bill and Mrs Pargeter waves the pen away. The account is already square, she says, paid in a glove, a spoon and a letter that turned out to be a bill from the bank.

The cat sits on the sill with its bow a little crooked, watching the last star fade on the glass.
