Celestial doodles across the back of a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The back of a pale hand with dark painted nails carries small black ink motifs, including ringed planets, stars, a sun with rays, crescent moons and spirals. Some geometric symbols and an eye sit on the fingers and the side of the hand. The thin, even linework is set against a dark, speckled night sky backdrop, and the image is entirely black ink with no colour.

In the village of Harrowmere, the schoolmistress Agnes Fell kept a tin of soot ink and a fine steel nib in her desk drawer. Every child leaving for the mill towns or the coast got drawn on before the carrier's cart came up the hill. She gave them the planets first, then the stars, because, she said, a person could lose a road but never the sky above it.

Her method was plain. She sat each child at the long table by the window, took the small cold hand in her lap, and worked from wrist to knuckle with the same even line. Ringed Saturn went on the back of the palm where the pulse ran. Crescent moons went on the fingers, and a sun with rays went at the centre, where a child could look down and find it when frightened. She never hurried, and she never drew a star twice in the same place.
Thirty-one children went down the Harrowmere road under her ink. Most grew up and forgot the marks until the soot wore thin and turned to grey. Then, in October, the old school held its reunion in the same room, and a man she barely knew came in with his palm held out like a question. The planets had blurred into freckles. Agnes said nothing. She took his hand, licked her nib, and began again at the wrist.
When she finished, he turned his hand to the window. Outside, the first stars were coming out over the hill, and they stood exactly where the ink had them.
