Charlie Brown and Snoopy on a lakeside dock

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Charlie Brown and Snoopy seen from behind, sitting side by side at the end of a wooden dock. Clean outlines define the cartoon figures, while soft blended shading gives the blue night sky, the water and the distant trees a painterly look. The scene is framed by a rounded vignette and the name Charles W. Brown is written in black script beneath the dock.

The rain had stopped by the time Nan Carrow parked above Pike Lake, though the tarpaulins at Hollin Market were still dripping behind them. Her grandson Ellis sat with his hood up and a bucket of unsold bait wedged between his boots. The beagle, Pretzel, had already pressed his nose to the glass, ears flapping at nothing in particular.

Down on the dock the planks were slick and the sky had cleared to a deep, bruised blue. Ellis had been promised two hours of fishing for every stall he helped pack, and he meant to collect. He walked out to the end, past the post with the cracked enamel sign, and sat down in his yellow zigzag jumper, the one his mother said made him look like a wasp that had given up. Pretzel trotted after him and settled at his shoulder, both of them staring at the water.

Nan watched from the bank. She had sold him his first rod on the opening day of the market, and a good many things she shouldn't have, but she had never seen him this still. Clouds sat low over the far trees like small lost sheep. Somewhere a gull complained, then thought better of it.

When the line finally tugged, Ellis did not shout. He only turned his round head toward her and grinned, and the dog barked once, very pleased with himself. Nan carried the bucket down the planks and found nothing in it worth saving, which seemed exactly right.
