Snoopy sitting beneath a red heart on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A black outline drawing of the cartoon beagle Snoopy sits on a tuft of grass, gazing up towards a small solid red heart above its head. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the heart is the only area of colour. The design is centred on pale skin against a plain, light background.

Dear Marguerite,

The dog was still sitting on the verge when the bus pulled out of Tonopah, exactly where I'd left him that morning, nose tipped up at the sky as if someone had promised him weather. I bought him a tin of sardines at the garage and he ate them with the seriousness of a magistrate. Nobody in town claimed him. The woman at the diner said he'd been walking the highway since spring, following the cars and never quite catching one.

I'm writing from a motel room with a broken ice machine, and I keep thinking about the heart. Not a real one, obviously. The little red thing hung above his head like a thought he hadn't decided to have yet. Mr Okafor at the petrol station swore it was painted on a cardboard sign that blew off a lorry in 1987, and that the dog has been looking at it ever since. I told him that was nonsense. He told me the desert turns nonsense into scripture.

Here is what I did. I bought a second tin, drove back out to the verge at dusk, and sat in the car with the door open. He didn't come over. He just kept gazing up at that heart, and after a while I realised I was doing the same thing.

I'll be at the Route 6 junction on Thursday if you want to see him. Bring the red lead. He'll pretend he doesn't want it.

Love, Ruth
