Watercolour heart with pins on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red and salmon heart, outlined with fine dark stitching, sits at the centre of the design, with thin lines radiating outwards that end in small coloured pin heads. The heart has a soft, washed watercolour fill, and the pins use green, purple, blue, yellow and orange. The photograph is taken close up, with the wrist filling the frame and a few bangles visible below it.

Dear Mam,

The gate still drags over the flags when it rains, so I lifted it the way Dad showed us and went through to the shed with the rhubarb gone to seed beside it. I found your sewing box under the potting bench, wrapped in a tea towel that smelt of creosote. Inside, the heart pincushion sat where it always did, still bristling with pins whose coloured heads had faded to the colour of old sweets.
I counted them on the kitchen table while the kettle boiled. Forty-one pins, each with a bead of green or violet or buttercup yellow, and every one stuck into a little red felt heart that you must have stitched again and again, because the seams have been unpicked and resewn so often the thread has gone soft as hair. Round the back, pencilled in your capitals, were dates. Some were the day Tom went to Hull. Some just said RAIN.
I did not expect to cry over a pincushion. I did, a bit, and then I laughed at myself, because you would have told me to stop mooning and get the bag of rags off the chair. So I have taken one pin out, the blue one, and put it in my own cushion. It's a start. The garden can wait until Sunday.
Love, Ruth
