Mrs Pryce brought a branch of blossom up from the platform garden this afternoon, sawn off where the permanent way gang cut back the plum by the goods shed. She said it would be a shame to let it go to the bin.

I've stood it in the brown jug on the windowsill. Five petals each, pink at the edge and paler at the heart, and the buds still shut tight as if they're waiting for someone to tell them it's safe. The moon came up over the embankment while I was filling the kettle, big and dull as a pewter plate, and it lit the whole branch so the flowers looked lit from inside. I thought of the night you walked out to check the points in the frost and came back saying the sky had gone the colour of a bruise on top and milk underneath.

I'm writing because the stationmaster has offered the lamp room to the Women's Institute for a flower show in May, and I said I'd enter the jug. Mrs Pryce says it won't count unless the branch is still in flower by then, so I'm keeping it out of the draught and changing the water every morning before the first porter comes on.

Come home by the milk train if you can. I'll leave the back gate open and the lamp lit on the step. If the moon is still up when the blossom starts to go, I'll wake you so you can watch the petals come down against it.
