Dear Tom, the cat came back again last night, the same one, grey as wet slate with eyes the blue-green of a swimming pool at dusk. It sat on the bonnet of the lorry that's been dead since March and grinned at me for a full minute before it faded, starting with the tail and ending with the teeth, which hung there a second longer as if it had something to say and wanted the last word.

Mum says it's the heat. Mum says a lot of things from her chair by the window, now that the road has gone quiet and the coaches no longer stop for the good coffee. I told her the trucks still come through, only faster, and that the sign by the pumps still reads Last Water 90 Miles, though I painted over the zero last winter because nobody needed the alarm.
Anyway. The writing on the wall behind the till, the one you did with a marker when you were nine, still says we're all mad here. I never had the heart to scrub it. Last week a young couple in a hire car read it out loud, laughed, and asked whether I was the one who'd made the joke. I said no, that it was a boy who knew more than me, and they bought two bottles of water each and drove off towards the grey hills.
Come home for the harvest, or come home for nothing. The cat will be here either way, and I think it's waiting for you to say the next line.
