Fine line black tattoo of two overlapping outlined hearts above the script word sisters, placed on the top of a foot.

Sisters script with two linked hearts on foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two outlined hearts that overlap at the top, with the word sisters written in cursive script beneath them. The linework is thin and even in black ink, and the lettering has a loose, handwritten slant. The small design sits near the centre of the frame against warm, orange-toned skin and a dark fabric edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The river barge Marigold had two hulls that never quite agreed, and the Dunmore sisters had been fighting over which one to steer from since the spring their father drowned his boots in the canal. Ada wanted the long narrow hull for the locks. Bett wanted the broad one for the bread ovens. Neither would give way, so they took turns at the tiller by the week, and the bargemen along the Ouse made bets on whose turn it was by the way the smoke leaned.

One November the river rose brown and fast after three nights of rain, and the Marigold broke her line at Naburn weir. The hulls slid apart like two loaves torn in half. Bett clung to the broad one with the ovens still warm. Ada went over the rail after the narrow one, and the cold took the breath out of her before she could shout. Bett got a rope into her hand and hauled, and they lay on the mud bank till the lamps came down the towpath.

That winter neither of them would say the other had saved her. They only drew, with a stub of blacking on the cabin wall, two hearts that leaned together at the top like a pair of gossiping women. Under them Bett wrote SISTERS in the looping hand their mother used for recipes, and Ada did not rub it out. Come spring they steered the two hulls side by side through the locks, and nobody on the bank could tell which sister had the tiller.
