Two photos of a Cheshire Cat tattoo on the chest: a black line grin with blue eyes in daylight, and a glowing outline of the whole cat under ultraviolet light.

Cheshire Cat grin on the chest

Chest · Mixed · Photo

The left photo shows a small Cheshire Cat grin in black linework with a toothed smile and two blue-filled eyes, set on the upper chest beneath a dark top. The right photo shows a larger outline of the cat's body glowing teal under ultraviolet light, with gloved hands at the edges of the frame. The linework is clean and the shading is minimal, with the composition centred on the cat's face.

Dear Nell, the cat has come back, though not the way you would want. Last Tuesday, after I had switched off the bench lamp, I found the grin still hanging over the workbench, two blue eyes and a row of teeth, the sort of smile that waits for you to finish a sentence.

You remember Aunt Ruth's ledgers. She wrote the household accounts in an ink that vanished in daylight, and every page had a cat tucked into the margin for whoever owned the violet lamp. Grandfather called it nonsense. He kept the lamp under the stairs and went to his grave without once plugging it in. Yesterday I dragged it out to check a glue seam, and there was the whole cat, stretched along the spine of the Bradshaw ledger, its tail curled around the word Debit.

I tried to rub it out with spirit and a rag, the way Ruth warned us never to, and the outline only brightened, the eyes burning a deeper blue. By midnight I had stopped minding. The grin kept pace with me down the stairs, and when the lamp clicked off it stayed exactly where I had left it, smiling at the dark.

Tell Mum I am fine. I think I will leave the cat where it is. Somebody should keep the accounts honest. Your brother, Tobias.
