Glitter cat face with flower on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat face outlined in rose-gold glitter sits on the inner forearm, with purple glitter eyes, nose, whiskers and a purple flower on top of the head. A clear and a yellow rhinestone are placed beside the flower and eye area as decoration. The design is a flat outline with no shading, and the bright glitter colours dominate against the skin tone.

The generator coughed twice and died, which meant the glitter pots would have to wait for the lamp. Nell wiped her fingers on her apron and reached for the biscuit tin where her gran had kept the stencils, the rhinestones and a dozen things nobody had asked for. The cat stencil was cut from a cornflakes box in 1974 and had gone soft at the corners like old bread. Mags had always said a cat needed a bit of nonsense on its head, so there was the flower, and there was the yellow stone that never matched anything.

Across the fairground the Waltzer was already slowing, and Kit was shouting at the lads on the generator to hurry up. Rain was coming over the ferris wheel in a grey sheet. Nell's stall had had a steady queue since lunch, mostly mums and the odd teenager who wanted something to hide under a sleeve, and every second person asked for the cat. She had run out of the rose-gold glitter twice. The yellow stone had gone missing somewhere between Tuesday and Saturday, so she dug through the tin for a replacement and found instead a folded slip of paper, yellowed and creased, in Mags's loopy hand.
It said only: Put the yellow one by the flower. Ask first. Always ask first.
Nell laughed at that, then stopped laughing, because the queue had gone quiet and a small figure stood at the front holding out a wrist without a word. She looked at the wrist, then at the stencil, then at the paper. The rain hit the canvas roof like gravel. She pressed the cat down carefully, dabbed the rose-gold through, lifted the stencil away and placed the yellow stone just beside the purple flower, exactly where the note said it should go.
