Nell had been told twice to leave the black lamp alone. Uncle Tom said it was for checking the flour sacks for mice, and she had nodded the way she nodded at everything before four in the morning. Now the ovens ticked as they cooled and the back room smelled of scorched sugar, and she was on her knees behind the proving cabinet with the torch angled low, watching the floor tiles bloom violet.

Something was glowing in the seam beneath the bench. Not paint, not spilt glaze. A cat, drawn in one bright line, lying on its belly with its tail curled round a tin of currants. It had been there since spring, Tom had said, when a boy from the sign shop came to fix the lettering and left behind a sheet of tracing paper he'd rubbed with ink and forgotten. Nell followed the outline with one finger. The stripes ran the length of its body in cyan rings, and when she moved the torch the cat seemed to shift its weight.

At the front of the shop the bolt scraped. Tom was early. Nell scrambled up, swept the torch under a sack and clicked the lamp off. In the ordinary light the floor was only floor. Tom came through with his coat still buttoned and stopped in the doorway, sniffing. "Did you find the mice?"

"Only the cat," she said. He looked at the bench, and for a moment something grinned at her from the grain of the wood, wide and pleased with itself, before the grey window light took it away. Tom reached for the first tray of loaves and said nothing, which she supposed was his way of agreeing.
