The path is finished at last, though Dad would say I've laid it crooked. Biscuit walked across the fresh mortar the morning after I poured it, before anyone could stop him, and left two rows of prints as neat as a stamp collection. Four toes and a pad like a thumbprint, going nowhere in particular. I left them. You'll think me soft, but I wanted something of his to stay put once he couldn't.

Last month the vet sat with me on the back step and drew a loop in the air with one finger, the sideways eight, and said that was how the old ones used to draw forever. I didn't ask who the old ones were. I only remember the finger going round and round while the light went out of the lavender.

I dug the bed by the wall where he liked to sleep in the sun and planted the bulbs he spent a whole spring trying to eat. Tulips, mostly, red ones, which the squirrels have already had. The stone I turned up while digging was flat and grey, shaped like a valentine, and it fits exactly into the hollow where his bed used to be. I've set it there with the last brick of the path, so every time I come out with the watering can I step on his prints and feel the ground give a little.
