Cheshire Cat tattoo in colour
Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style Cheshire Cat lies curled with its striped tail wrapped around its body, showing a wide toothy grin, yellow eyes and a blue-grey head. Bold dark outlines and purple shadow areas give the figure depth, and a dark halo surrounds the design against the skin. The composition is tightly framed on the tattoo with the surrounding skin only partly visible.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop fidgeting with those inkpots, because Brother Anselm is going to tell you about the cat that came to Saint Ebba's in the hard winter the bell cracked. Nobody saw it come in. The porter swore the postern gate was barred, yet there it was on the cold flags of the refectory, stretched along the warm side of the bread oven as if it had paid for the room.

It was striped in the colours of a bruised plum and a pink that had no business in a monastery, and its tail kept curling round itself as though it were trying to hold on to something. Brother Cuthbert, who had kept a vow of silence for forty years, broke it to tell the creature to get out. The cat only grinned. It was a wide, sharp, pleased grin, and it stayed long after the rest of the cat had gone, so that for a whole afternoon the brothers saw those teeth hanging over the lintel of the cellar door with nothing beneath them.
Cuthbert went to the abbot that night. The abbot, who was no fool, asked him what the cat had said. Cuthbert answered, for the first and only time in his life, "Nothing. It never needs to." Then the grin slid back across the rafters, and the abbot laughed until he wept, and the cat was never seen again. The cellar smelled of plums until Lent, and the bell was never mended.
So when you go down to the cellar tonight for the good wine, mind the third step, and if you see teeth in the dark, don't ask them anything. Just say good evening, and go back up the stairs slowly.
