Cheshire Cat tattoo on lower back

Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland lying down with a wide grin, large yellow-and-white eyes and a pink nose. Its striped body is shaded in purple, pink and lilac with smooth, bold outlines, and its tail curls to the right. It sits on the lower back, just above the waistband of jeans and a pink top, against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wedding at Mallow Hythe had been going since noon, and by the third reel nobody could say who had invited the cat. It lay along the top of the churchyard wall, striped in plum and lilac, its tail curled back like a question, and it grinned at the guests as though it knew the price of the bride's dowry and found it funny.

Old Hester Pim, who had buried two husbands and kept the mill, went up to shoo it off with her apron. The cat watched her come. When she reached the wall it had thinned to the grin alone, a crescent of white teeth hanging in the air above the stones, and the grin said, "You'll want to check the cake before the groom does." Hester checked the cake. The groom had already been at it with a spoon, and the bride's mother had been searching for the ring since Thursday.

The cat's grin would not say where the ring was. It only said, "Ask the one who is not looking," and then it laughed, which was the worst of it, because the laugh came from everywhere at once. Hester went round the marquee asking after the one who was not looking, and nobody answered her, until she found the ring-bearer asleep under the trestle with his cheek on a bag of rice.

When the cat was gone from the wall, its tail was still there, curled on the coping stone and pointing at the church door. Hester took the ring from the boy's pocket, slipped it into the bride's hand, and said nothing about the grin. Some things, she said later, are kinder left in the telling.
