Chibi Jason Voorhees tattoo on a leg
Calf · Colour · Photo
A chibi-style cartoon figure of Jason Voorhees wearing his yellow hockey mask with black eye and breather holes, and a grey jacket with a dark outline. A bloody machete with red blade and brown handle rests against the figure's left side. The bold black linework is combined with yellow, red, brown and grey fills, and the design is centred on a plain skin background.

The reunion committee has booked the sports hall at Ashcombe Comprehensive for Saturday, and you have been put in charge of the raffle, the urn and the dreadful sausage rolls. Nobody else from the class of ninety-eight will admit they remember Dale Pickering, the boy who wore a hockey mask to every PE lesson and was never once asked to take it off.

By nine the hall smells of squash and floor polish. Someone has pinned a banner reading WELCOME BACK, and the W has come loose and hangs upside down. You are counting raffle tickets when the side door bangs and a tall figure stoops through it, mask gone the colour of old piano keys, a machete held low and careful, like a furled umbrella. It is Dale. He has brought a bottle of cheap prosecco and an apology for being late, which is more than anyone expected from him.
He tells you he has spent nineteen years driving a bread van out of Crawley and that the mask is simply easier to talk through. The machete, he says, is for the cake. You laugh, because it is the sort of joke you would have made at fifteen. Then he lays the blade on the trestle table, its red paint catching the strip light, and asks whether the committee ever sent him the right date. You check the list. Dale Pickering has been ticked off already, in your own handwriting, from the year you were the only one who bothered to write anything down.
You look up. He is still standing by the door, politely waiting for someone to say his name.
