Ribs · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon characters in a chibi style, a green-hatted figure on the left and a long-haired figure with a crown on the right, with a small winged sprite above them. Below sits a treble clef and a five-line musical staff with yellow and green triangular notes, drawn in dark outlines with flat fills. The palette is mainly red, pink, green, yellow and skin tones, and the design sits on the side of the torso against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler at Gallowmere hall would not play the last reel until the boy in the green hat had danced it, and nobody in the parish could say why. Every Saturday the lamps were lit over the sawdust floor and the girls came in their pink shawls, and every Saturday the boy stood by the door with his hands in his pockets, looking at the boards as if the tune might be written there.

One night a small light came in through the broken pane above the stage, a sprite no bigger than a thimble, green and quick, and it hung over the crown-haired girl who had come with her aunt from the far side of the moor. It hummed four notes, up and then down, and the fiddler's bow stopped. He said he had never heard that tune and his father had never heard it either. The sprite darted to the boy and back again, tugging at his sleeve until he crossed the floor.

They danced it through the first time badly, and the second time better. On the third turn the girl laughed and the whole hall looked up, because nobody had heard her laugh before. The fiddler copied the tune from the page of his old book, five lines with the notes pinned on them like yellow and green beads, and the boy understood at last that the music had been waiting for two people to walk it together. The sprite settled on a rafter and went quiet.

When the lamps were put out, the girl's aunt found the boy's green hat on the bench, and beside it a little brass whistle that sounded the four notes whenever the wind blew through the door. Nobody ever saw either of them again, but on Saturdays the fiddler still stops before the last reel and waits, and the whole hall waits with him, until someone starts the tune again.
