Pixel art piranha plant on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A pixel art piranha plant sits on the inner forearm, with a red and white head, a green stem and two green leaves. It rises from a small greyish base with soft shading beneath it. The design is centred on the arm against a teal fabric background, with a dark sleeve at the top of the frame.

The water in the old well-house had been black for a week, and Gwen Pritchard was not paid to be squeamish. She knelt on the wet flags with a torch in her teeth and followed the lead pipe down under the curtain wall of Carreg Lwyd, past the ivy roots and the iron ring where the portcullis once hung. Someone in the 1950s had run a green cast-iron pipe across the old moat bed, and the bricks around its mouth were scorched in a ring, as if something had been burning there for years and then stopped.

The head came up first, out of the murk at the pipe's throat. Red, with white spots that caught the torchlight in neat squares, and a set of jaws that opened and shut on the current with a dull clack. Gwen had cleared plenty of blockages: rags, roots, a dead heron once. Nothing had ever looked back at her. The plant swayed on its stem the way a dog does when it has been waiting by a door, and under the drip she heard the chime of a coin dropping into a bucket.
She didn't clear it. She sat back on her heels and told the hotel manager on the phone that the drain was only a problem of pressure, and she billed the call-out with the cost of one new washer. Every spring after that, she left a saucer of milk by the well-house gate and a note in the hollow of the wall: Mind the moat, love. The water has run clean since.
