Two forearms are raised towards the camera, each with three round, cartoon-style superhero characters in bold colour. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week of August the Pemberton orchard had more windfalls than the wasps could manage, and you were the only one still up the old Bramley when the sky went the colour of weak squash. Your gran's ladder had one good rung left. Below, the crates sat in a row with the faces you had painted on them in July: a round red chap in a mask, a blue one with a shield he had nicked from the church bake sale, a lanky spider who could hang off a gutter by one foot, and a green brute with far too many teeth for an apple.

Nobody had asked the crates to be heroes. Still, when the rain came sideways that Thursday and the pickers ran for the barn, the crates stayed put and the apples kept dropping. Your cousin Priya swore she heard the blue shield clang against the tailgate. You told her it was the wind. You did not tell her you had been talking to the crates all week, asking them to keep the jam pan warm and the wasps off the Cox's, and that the green one had grinned back at you on Tuesday.

By dusk the barn smelled of cinnamon and wet cardboard. Dev counted the crates twice and got a different number each time, which he blamed on the light. Nobody counted the Bramleys you had carried down on your back, four trips, one for each of the faces, though you had only meant to take three. The last one still had its stalk, and it rolled across the tiles and stopped against your boot as if it were waiting to be introduced.
