The cat had come up from the harbour wall that morning, thin as a rope and furious, and Marcia had decided it was hers before the fishmonger's boy could shout. Now it sat in her lap on the bench outside the bakery, kneading her good blue tunic with claws that did not care about the cloth.

Her mother had pinned a wreath of myrtle and bay into her hair for the festival of Vesta, with a wisp of heron feather that the boy Lucius had traded her for a clay whistle. The leaves kept slipping. Every time she bent to soothe the kitten, a sprig fell over her eyes and the whole street seemed to tilt.

Her cousin Julia came hurrying through the crowd with the news that the procession would not pass until dusk. Marcia barely heard. She was watching the kitten's striped tail flick against her knee, and thinking how a creature so small could look at the world as if it had already decided what it thought of it.

When the drums finally started, she stood and lifted the kitten to her shoulder. Julia laughed and reached to steady the wreath, and Marcia let her. The procession went by in gold and smoke, and the cat, ignoring all of it, purred against her ear like a kettle beginning to hum.
