City skyline and heartbeat line on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a city skyline drawn as a single thin dark outline, with the tallest tower rising near the centre. On the right, the skyline flattens into a heartbeat-style line with a small spike and dip. The ink is one dark tone on pale skin, set against a blurred grey, textured background.

Her brother Ferdie ran the night ward on the seventh floor of St Agnes, where the monitors chirped in a rhythm she could hear in her sleep. Years ago he had drawn the skyline for her on the back of a pharmacy receipt, in one unbroken pen line, and told her a city was just a heartbeat somebody had stretched out long enough to build things on.

He pressed the call button and said, "Come on, old man, you've still got a view to see." When the spike came back, small and stubborn, Maud felt it in her own chest, as if the line ran through the floor and into her shoes.
She reached the bridge as the sky greyed. The skyline lay across the water exactly as Ferdie had drawn it, the spire pricking the light, and beside it the flat river and the short spike of the hospital chimney. She took out her phone and, for once, did not check the time. She just watched the sun climb over the towers and waited for the next beat.
