Black and grey fine line tattoo of a city skyline with spires and a dome, placed across the upper back above a black bra strap.

Fine line city skyline on the back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A continuous single-line outline of a city skyline, showing tall spires, a rounded dome and several smaller towers with crosses on their peaks. The linework is thin and even, in black ink on pale skin, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits centrally across the upper back, with a black bra strap and fastening running along the bottom of the frame.

Dora had been told by her grandfather that a skyline was only a line you forgot to lift the pen from. At the Halstad crossing, with the barrier arm hanging still and the guard turning her passport over as though it might confess something, she held her pen above the sketchpad and waited for permission to move.

"Purpose of visit?"

"To draw the view," she said, and pointed through the bus window at the city beyond the river, where the cathedral rose above the roofs like a folded hand, its dome pale against the drizzle, and the bell towers stood in a ragged row with their small crosses catching what light there was.

The guard looked where she pointed, then down at the drawing she had been making since the last checkpoint: one unbroken stroke that began at the left edge of the page, climbed three spires, swelled into the dome, dropped, rose again, and ran off the right. No pauses. No corrections. Her grandfather had made her practise it on the backs of envelopes until her wrist ached and her pencil wore flat.

The barrier lifted. The bus rolled forward onto the bridge, and Dora kept her pen moving, the city sliding past the glass in a slow procession of stone. On the far bank she finally lifted the nib and checked the page. The line had come down exactly where the last tower met the water, as if the whole city had been waiting for her to finish it.
