Infinity symbol with Mickey ears and Minnie bow
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A healed or fresh tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm shows an infinity symbol drawn in solid black linework, with its loops shaped as Mickey Mouse ears. A small red bow with white polka dots sits at the right-hand end of the design. The black lines are even and the bow is the only colour, set against plain skin on a dark padded surface.

The figure-of-eight track at Hollin Green never closed properly, so Dad stood at the bottom of the ramp every evening with a tin of cold tea and watched the cars come round the crossover as if he could fix them by looking hard enough.

The year I turned nine he let me paint the sign over the gate. He had already done the big letters and the two round loops that made the track look like a pair of ears, and he handed me a fine brush and a pot of red for the bow. I mixed in too much varnish because I wanted it to shine, and I put white dots on with the wrong end of a brush, one for every week the fair had been on the road that year. Mum laughed when she saw it. She said it looked dressed for church.
We packed up in October with frost on the lorries. The sign went face down under a tarpaulin in the yard behind the chapel in Ashby, and nobody thought about it again until spring, when the rain had lifted every scrap of paint except the bow. The varnish had kept it hard and wet-looking, bright as a stop sign in the dark. Dad came out with his tea and found me crouched beside it, drawing the figure of eight in chalk on the tarmac.
He didn't say anything. He just walked the loop with me, one foot after the other, round the left ear, across the crossover, round the right, until we were back where we had started and the chalk line met itself without a gap.
