Small cloud outline on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small cloud outline is tattooed on the upper shoulder of a person whose face is not shown. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the pale skin. The cloud sits near the centre of the frame, with a soft, blurred background of light fabric and a dark seat.

I was nine the year he let me hold the brush. The cloud was the only shape on the whole sign he never filled in. Ray said a painted cloud was only honest if you could see the blue straight through it. I asked why we didn't colour it white. He said white was for the big top, and we were a travelling show, so we didn't need to pretend.
The fair folded for the last time the autumn the lorries stopped coming. Ray died in a hospice in Corby with the stencil under his pillow. When I finally unfolded it, the crease had gone soft as cloth. I thought about colouring the shape in, then decided against it, because the gap was the point.
Last week the rain came sideways across the seafront, and a boy in a yellow mac stopped dead on the pavement and pointed up with his mouth open. I looked where he was pointing. A single grey cloud sat over the pier, its edges sharp as pen lines, and through the middle of it I could see the blue all the way down.
