Clutch and Gas words on two calves
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A person stands from behind in black shorts and dark trainers, showing two tattoos on the backs of their calves. The left calf reads "Clutch." and the right reads "Gas.", both in black ink with a typewriter-style font and crisp, even lines. The plain pale floor and neutral framing keep the focus on the lettering.

The learner, a boy called Dennis who had been sent to her by his mother and not by his own wishes, kept his eyes fixed on the bonnet of the Escort. The car shuddered. On the steep stretch above the mill the engine stalled twice, and each time he swore under his breath while she wrote on the index card in her lap, turning the words over before she typed them at the kitchen table that night.
Every Sunday she typed a new card for each pupil on the old Olivetti her husband had bought in 1974, and every card ended with the same two words. Clutch. Gas. She had never seen the point of anything longer. A pupil who understood those two could be trusted with the rest.
By the third lesson Dennis could hold the car on the hill with nothing but his right foot and a whisper of throttle. When they pulled up outside the bus shelter he sat a moment, hands loose on the wheel, and said, 'Is that it, then? Just the two?'
'That's all anyone ever needs,' she said, and handed him the card. Beneath the typed words, in her looping hand, she had added a third: Breathe.
