Coffee mug with Mornin' lettering
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A small line drawing of a mug of coffee, with a handle on the right and a dark coffee surface at the top, sits above the word Mornin' written in a hand-lettered style. The linework is thin and even, with no shading. The design is centred on a plain pale grey background with a lot of empty space around it.

Tom Pilling had kept Hawksworth Lock for thirty-one years and had never once opened the gates before the kettle went on in his own cottage. So when the Mary Ashworth came nosing out of the mist at a quarter to six, her cabin dark and her chimney cold, he stood on the beam with his hands in his coat and waited for whoever was at the tiller to shout.

Nobody shouted. Eli Ashworth stepped off the back deck with a rope, made her fast without looking up, and went back inside. Pilling walked down to the top gate and saw what the boat had been carrying all along: a chipped enamel mug set square in the middle of the hatch cover, steam rising from it into the cold.
Later, when the lock was full and the water had lifted the barge level with the coping, Pilling climbed down to check the paddles and found Eli sitting on an upturned crate on the towpath. The mug was on the cobbles beside him. Pilling could read the words painted on its side in cheap white gloss, Mornin', with the apostrophe trailing off the end the way his wife used to say it did.
"Every morning since February," Eli said, without being asked. "She'd have me up at five to get the stove lit, then out she'd come with that mug and say it like she'd personally got the sun up. Makes no odds to the cut whether there's anyone to drink it." He lifted the mug, found the coffee cold, and drank it anyway. Pilling took off his cap, went home, filled the kettle, and came back with two cups.
