Handwritten fine-line script reading friendship: one mind, two bodies, written diagonally on cream paper as a lettering design with no body placement shown.

Friendship quote in handwritten script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten script phrase, friendship: one mind, two bodies, runs diagonally across a cream paper background. The letters have a slim, even stroke in black ink, with looped capitals and a long flowing tail on the final word. The soft vignette lighting darkens the corners and leaves the lettering as the clear focus.

Nobody crossing at Carrow Bridge ever looks at the handwriting on a customs form, which is why I always do. Most of it is hurried block capitals. The two women who came to my booth on a wet Tuesday had written their declarations in the same slim, even hand, the capitals curled over like the tails of kites. The taller one kept her passport open at the photograph page, as if she expected me to compare her face to the sky.

"Purpose of travel?" I asked.

"She's going to be sick of me by Friday," said the taller one, "so we've agreed a fortnight, and I'm to be back before the tide turns." The other laughed and tapped the counter twice with one finger. "We only have one opinion between us, so you'll have to take her word for it."

The shorter one slid an envelope under the glass. On its front, in that same looping script, someone had written RUTH, DO NOT OPEN UNTIL THE PLATFORM. I did not open it. I looked at the line of ink running across the top of the paper, sure and unbroken, and thought of my own mother's letters, which always began mid-sentence as though she had been talking to me all along.

I stamped both passports and handed them back. At the gate the taller woman turned round, holding the envelope against her coat, and said something I couldn't hear over the rain. Her friend answered without looking back. I didn't need to hear it. They were already walking in step, one wide umbrella between them, and the sky over the bridge was the colour of the paper that had been folded inside the envelope.
