Collage of seven small fine line tattoos

Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo

This collage shows seven small tattoos on different parts of the body, including an origami crane with floral accents, a dinosaur behind the ear, a unicorn with tiny flowers, a walking girl with scattered stars, a set of scales, an umbrella with raindrops and a planetary orbit scene with a rocket. Most designs use delicate single-line outlines, with some pastel or bright colour accents and a watercolour-style wash behind the umbrella. The compositions are small and centred on each piece, set against plain skin and a dark backdrop in the final image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The woman from platform nine wanted her umbrella back, though she couldn't say what colour it was, only that one rib was bent and she'd bought it in a hurry the morning her mother went into hospital. I told her to describe the rain instead. She looked at me as if I'd asked for a password, and then, slowly, she did.

Lost property at Halden Road is a shelf of small things nobody thinks to report. Most Tuesdays I sort them into carrier bags: a rocket made from a yoghurt pot, a unicorn keyring with the mane rubbed off, a paper crane folded so tightly its wings had gone soft, a brass set of kitchen scales that could only weigh pennies. Dilys runs the desk and believes every one of them has a story. Stars, she says, are what people leave behind when they're too tired to be sad about it properly.

In March a man came in with a torn ticket and a cardboard tube he'd been carrying since Ipswich. Inside were seven drawings of small things, each in the same thin pen: a girl walking through a scatter of dots, a dinosaur peeking over a collar, a ringed planet sitting in an orbit beside a rocket. He asked whether I'd seen them. I hadn't. I put the tube on the top shelf between the crane and the scales and kept it there for a month.

In April the umbrella woman came back, and I handed her the one I'd found under a bench, crooked rib and all. She opened it under the strip lights and a little rain shook loose onto the lino, which made Dilys laugh until she had to sit down. Some things come back to you exactly as you left them, I said. The woman didn't argue. She just held the umbrella a little higher.
